Earlier this month AMLÉ attended the launch event of a new training programme aimed at helping people to understand and reduce their stress. This programme was developed by the HSE Health and Wellbeing and HSE Psychology, and is called the ‘Balancing Stress programme

The training is free, and is made up of six sessions that take about 35 minutes each to complete. You can do them in your own time on any device. The training has been developed by experts and is based on evidence-based approaches.

Some stress can be good, and can help to motivate us or make us feel excited about things. Too much stress, or stress that continues over a long period of time, can have detrimental impact on both our physical and mental health.

Some of the negative impacts of too much stress include increased anxiety, lower mood, muscle pains, stomach or digestive issues, and if we really overload our systems with more stress than it can cope with, it can eventually lead to burnout. Burnout can take a long time to recover from and can have many long-lasting effects, so it’s really important that we try as much as possible to avoid it.

There will always be things in life that will cause us stress, but if we can learn to identify those sources of stress, learn how they impact us, and develop some skills so that we know what to do to mitigate the impact of those stressors, we are much less likely to end up in burnout, and we’re much more likely to cope well when like throws a curveball.

The Balancing Stress programme is freely available to everyone and is an easy way to get a head start if you’ve never really thought about your stress levels, or to check in and upskill if you’ve already been working on managing your stress. Taking the course is a pro-active way to prioritise your mental health and to take some time for yourself and your needs.
